Belmopan is Belize's capital and the nearest city to Caves Branch River Estates, about 12–15 minutes by car. For an owner here it is the practical hub: the closest place for government offices, a hospital, banking and a full shop.
Why the capital is inland
Belize City, on the coast, was the capital until Hurricane Hattie damaged it in 1961. Belmopan was built inland as a planned replacement and became the capital in 1970. That history is the reason Belize's government sits in a small inland city rather than its largest one, and it is part of why the Cayo interior has the road links it does.
What is there
- Government ministries and the National Assembly, along with foreign embassies and high commissions.
- Western Regional Hospital, the public hospital serving Cayo District.
- The University of Belize's main campus.
- Banks, supermarkets, a public market, fuel and the usual services of a small capital.
Belmopan is small by capital-city standards. Buyers used to a large metropolitan centre should visit before assuming what is and is not available locally; specific services, opening hours and providers change, so confirm anything you are relying on.
